How to merge PDFs without losing quality

Merging PDFs should not change them. A merge that re-encodes your pages — re-compressing images, re-flowing text — will soften photos and can change the file. The correct way to merge is to copy each page exactly as it is into the new document, and that is what this tool does. Your pages are copied, not re-encoded, so the merged PDF has exactly the same quality as the originals: the same resolution, the same fonts, the same images.

The reason some tools lose quality is that they rebuild the document from scratch, or they compress as a side effect of processing on a server. This tool does neither. It reads each PDF, copies every page in order, and writes one new PDF. Text stays vector text, photos stay at their original resolution, and nothing is re-compressed. You can verify it yourself: merge two PDFs, then compare a photo in the merged file with the same photo in the original — they are identical.

There is one thing merging does not do: it does not make a file smaller. If you merge ten 5 MB scans, the result is about 50 MB, at the same quality. That is the correct behaviour — a merge that silently shrinks your files is a merge that lost quality somewhere. If you need a smaller file afterwards, use the Compress PDF tool and choose the size yourself, so the quality trade-off is your decision, not a hidden side effect. And if a page looks different after merging, check the original: a merge copies pages faithfully, so any difference was already in the source file.

Frequently asked questions

Does merging reduce image quality?

No. Pages are copied exactly as they are — photos keep their original resolution and are never re-compressed. The merged PDF has the same quality as the originals.

Why do some merge tools lose quality?

Because they rebuild the document or compress it as a side effect of server processing. This tool only copies pages, so nothing is re-encoded.

The merged file is large. Is that normal?

Yes. Merging adds files together without shrinking them — ten 5 MB scans become a 50 MB PDF at full quality. Use the Compress PDF tool afterwards if you need it smaller.
